It is a well known fact on the net that many great documentaries, comedies, soccer events and many diverse programmes can be watched without having to have a SKY subscription package, or indeed a SKY Digital receiver box or dish(for those in the UK).
In the good old days before bandwidth limitations were beginning to lift, many people could only watch a sporting event such as a soccer match, or a much anticipated sporting event final, by downloading a webcam program joining a channel with similarly minded individuals where one of them had a subscription package to the sporting event, and with their cam would point it at their television set, for everybody else to watch. It was either that or go to a pub that had a subscription package to the sporting event.
The internet has opened up a superb world of digital information, and indeed many tv programmes that may not be aired for several months on their local television can now be accessed online almost on the day that there were first aired, take for example having to wait over a year to watch the latest episodes of Lost, 24, Heroes, Grey's Anatomy, The Simpsons and many other great shows, even if you have a digital satellite subscription, or have a digital satellite digibox with Free to Air channels.
The beauty of the internet is it now makes it possible for many of these great shows that were only accessible via a satellite subscription, or having to wait for quite some time before they were shown on local terrestial networks. These shows can now be accessed much sooner, and in mnay cases you can actually download and view previous shows, this certainly beats Sky plus's overheads (where live tv can be paused). All that is really required is a freely available media player such as Windows Media Player, or Real Player and a list of online tv stations sometimes broadcasting the event live as it happens. Never before has such digital information been so widely available as it is now.
Ofcourse the problem is having to find those channels where all these shows are accessible, and unfortunately the information is not readily available, for bandwidth reasons amongst others operators of these "internet tv" stations would like to keep their services a private secret, for friends and members only.
Not to mention sometimes the issue of copyright infringments occur and certain of those online tv channels, and their subsidiaries have to close for a while or even permanently.
There are a few websites dedicated to researching, updating and documenting the many online tv channels out there that regularly broadcast movies, and shows that may take a while before they are shown on the SKY digital channels, and an even longer while before they are shown on normal terrestial networks, some of these online tv channels are even indexed by the show type, movie type, and country location.
These range from the blockbuster movies, to sporting events, such as Champion's league matches, English Premier League matches, FA(Football Association) Cup, League Cup, UEFA(Union of European Football Associations) cup, German Bundesliga, Spanish Primera Liga, Dutch football and many other sporting events not shown on the SKY digital services.
The work ofcourse is finding out about genuine sites catering for these soccer live events and online tv channels, and finding out which ones have stayed for the long run, with constantly updated channels.
